Garden Planning

Yeee-haaaaw! I am so ready to get started! This is the time of year I get all fired up and start planning and preparing my garden.

All right-- before I begin, let me say a word. In my opinion my garden is small. Some folks may think it is large compared to their 4x4 plot, some folks may laugh and think it is as tiny as a fairy's garden compared to their 2 acre plot. Whatever you think, well, that is what you think. But however small my garden may be, it is still preparing me for something bigger. I have learned so much, and, ya know, ya have to start somewhere. :) I will be posting quite often about the garden, especially come March, April, and May. :)

OK--here come my plans.

Oh, "DS beside a variety or plant stands for "Direct sow" and "SI" stands for "sow indoors"--at least that is what I use. :)

Proposed Garden Plans--2009

Beans (DS)
-Soybeans
-Bush beans
-Black-eyed peas

Cucumber (DS)

Eggplant (SI)
-Purple
-White
-Japanese

Melon (DS)

Okra (DS)

Peppers (SI)
-Bell purple
-Bell white

Squash (DS)
-Crookneck
-Zuchinni
-Patty Pan
-A few new hybrids

Maters (SI)

Herbs (SI) and (DS)
-Basil (Lemon, sweet, Genovese)
-Mint (spearmint and peppermint)
-Oregano
-Rosemary
-Borage
-Chammomile
-Lavender
-Echinacea
-Calendula
-Marshmallow
-Valerian
-Evening Primrose
-St. John's Wort
-Arnica
-Aragula
-etc...

Flowers
-Zinnia
-Chrysanthemum
-Marigold
-petunia
-sunflower
-etc...

I have ordered most of my seeds, but there are a few I am still looking for. It can get hard finding all the varieties you want if you are only looking for organic. The best site I have found with the largest selection is Peaceful Valley (www.groworganic.com) Their own organic seeds were fairly priced, and I got a good discount, but their "Seeds of Change" organic seeds were expensive. If anybody knows of any other sites I could look into, I'd love to hear about it. :)

As soon as my orders arrive, I'll be starting my eggplants. Yay!

I can't wait to start my garden and herbs either! I am also planting six bushes of blueberry plants and about twenty strawberry. We go through fruit like crazy in our house!

I planted 4 blueberry bushes last year and was thinking of planting several more this year. We go through fruit purty fast too!

I'm impressed with all the herbs your planting! I look forward to having some more herb plants this spring/summer as well.
Do you have any tips on drying herbs?

BTW I really like the Homespun Dress song by Bobby Horton. When I was younger I memorized all of the lyrics.:)

It is a good bit, so we'll see how it goes... :)
About drying, I still can't get them to do right for me.
Maybe I'll have a better time with it this year.

But here is what you can do--

Harvest in the morning by cutting whole sprigs or a few inches of the stems. Wash carefully, give them a shake, pick off the leaves, and put them separately onto screens or newspapers. Let dry until the leaves are easily crumbled. (Sometimes it's too humid to do it this way)

You can also put them in in an oven (set at less than 150') for a few minutes, but leaving the door of the oven open. (just make sure no younguns are nearby) This allows the moisture to escape.

Once the herbs are dry, store in an airtight container.

Hope this helps. :)

I actually just bought Bobby Horton's CD!! I just can't believe I didn't get it any sooner. Now I just gotta save for his other volumes. :) I was just content with the 2nd South Carolina String Band...but shoooo-wee, I like Mr. Horton now!

Wow! You are ambitious. I know that is a lot of work.
I had a ball this year on my garden.
It is so wonderful to be able to eat your own veggies! My broccoli, cabbage and tomatoes are just abotut ready. Mmmm! (My peppers and limas froze last night...grrr)
Good luck on your enterprise!
In Him,
Sarah

Thank you Sarah!
Sometimes I'm afraid I'm a little too ambitious. :)
I'm sorry your peppers and limas froze. That can be very frustrating.
I'll bet your broccoli will be good though!!
